Case Study : Jiffy Group GHG Mapping Journey
Client: Jiffy Group
Sector: Manufacturing & distribution (Horticulture)
Services Provided: GHG Mapping
Engagement Period: November 2024 – January 2025
Background
Jiffy Group, a global provider of innovative horticulture products, sought to improve the completeness of its emissions reporting by expanding its Scope 3 inventory to include all relevant and material sources. To support this effort, Jiffy Group engaged Carbon Responsible to identify these sources for each site and to conduct a data quality and availability assessment.
Challenges
Scope 3 Complexity:
Understanding the emissions associated with Jiffy Group’s value chain (Scope 3) proved challenging due to the company’s complex structure and diverse business operations. With several facilities and a wide range of sold products, assessing both materiality and the level of control or influence for each Scope 3 category required extensive analysis.
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting Needs:
Jiffy needed to align its GHG reporting with both voluntary frameworks and evolving regulatory requirements. Determining the appropriate reporting boundaries and ensuring data collection processes met compliance standards was a key priority.
Approach
To address these challenges, Carbon Responsible worked closely with Jiffy to establish a structured and rigorous approach to GHG mapping:
- Comprehensive GHG Mapping:
- Identified all relevant and material emission sources across Jiffy Group’s global operations.
- Assessed the company’s level of control and influence over each emission category.
- Boundary Setting & Compliance Alignment:
- Ensured Scope 3 materiality assessment aligns with pre-defined reporting boundaries in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Ensured alignment with recognised reporting frameworks, including the GHG Protocol.
- Data Quality and Availability Assessment:
- Reviewed data availability and quality for all sites for all relevant sources. Provided recommendations for data quality improvement when needed.
Value Delivered
- Enhanced Data Accuracy: With a clear understanding of all relevant and material sources for each site and of the necessary data to calculate or estimate the emissions for each of these sources, Jiffy Group is now ready to produce a reliable emissions inventory.
- Improved Scope 3 Visibility: Through extensive mapping, Jiffy Group has a clearer understanding of its Scope 3 emissions, enabling better supplier engagement and reduction strategies.
- Regulatory Readiness: The structured approach ensures Jiffy Group meets compliance requirements while preparing for evolving global reporting standards.
Here’s what Carbon Responsible’s Emma Baldassari, Carbon Accounting & Data Lead had to say on working with Jiffy:
“Working with Jiffy Group on its GHG Mapping has highlighted the complexity of value chain emissions in the manufacturing industry and the importance of accurate estimation for categories where exact data is unavailable. Jiffy Group is now well-prepared to calculate its Scope 3 emissions accurately and use its first year of Scope 3 reporting as a solid baseline for setting targets. A common challenge with Scope 3 targets is that reported emissions often increase year over year as reporting expands, leading to the need for baseline recalculations. However, after this GHG mapping process, we do not anticipate this issue for Jiffy Group.”
Here’s what Jiffy Groups, Global Sustainability and Digital Transformation Manager, Richard Stevenson had to say about the experience:
“The Carbon Responsible team quickly understood our needs and business challenges and were able to highlight the relevant areas for extra attention. It can be very difficult to find appropriate ways to identify and collect the relevant Scope 3 data, but CR were able to offer practical advice on how to capture that data and to what level of detail, and the correct approach towards emission factors. The process was well described without over complicating it, helping us to clearly understand our scope 3 emissions boundaries and next steps.”
